The 9th International ‘Family Portrait’ Fine Arts Competition is organized again in this school  year in cooperation with Cyprian Kamil Norwid Comprehensive School of  Fine Arts in Lublin and Lublin Art Association. The competition is assigned to ‘The calendar of 1st and 2nd degree of  international and country art competitions in 2014/15 school year’ of  DSAiEK and CEA. The biennial was started in 1999, when the first edition was organized. It was inspired by the idea of International Family Congress – the idea which supports actions that rise the general reflection concerning the role of family in the contemporary world.

For several years the art competition has given the young people the opportunity to find and show family problems in the postmodern world. The view is important and precious because it is seen and interpreted by young artists who are just staring their own way of  creating art. The numbers show the  rate of  interest concerning the idea of the competitions: a few thousands works were sent during the eight previous editions of the competition and in the last edition in 2013 the organizers received over 700 works.

At this year edition the organizers have made  the competition’s theme Family Portrait wider and more directed. They have opened the theme with the words: ‘My home full of memories and dreams’. These words take people to the world of imagination, full of events that happened in the past as well as to the events they are waiting for, events they are dreaming of but these are just dreams….   Such interpretation of family portrait goes back to what is  positively rooted in our memory and imagination. Meeting the today’s postmodern culture destruction, media boom and pop culture, may be the reflection over what is the source of our sensibility and empathy – shortly speaking – our humanity.

Taking into account the international character of the competition, the theme gives the opportunity for culture confrontation – the idea of a society portrait, family portrait,

a family scene or a lost child’s paradise which are inscribed in the universal history of arts. Since the A.D. epoch  this picture is the one of the most characteristic phenomenon of our culture. It is going on with religion (e.g. paganism and Christianity), society, existentialism, immigration or ideology (e.g. progressive modernism). The awarded works from previous editions went to these inspirations using the modern art techniques and workshops.

The purpose of the competition:

The purpose of the 9th Fine Arts Competition ‘Family Portrait. My home full of memories and dreams’  is to confront various forms of art view among young people who are 15 to 20 years old students. The openness of the competition is for most talented students of art schools as well as for individual participants. The international character of the competition gives the opportunity to compare various cultures, exchange experiences and integrate young people from different countries.

The theme of the competition is the starting point to think about the values connected with the family in different aspects – social, psychological and cultural, referring directly or indirectly to problems that concern present – day people.

The competition works can be done in various disciplines related to modern art expression: drawing, painting, workshop design, computer design, sculpture, photography, art weaving,  a shot film or animation. It opens the way to choose the most appropriate medium to present the intended idea, answers the curriculum of art school education, gives the opportunity to mark the works according to the aesthetic and workshop values.
